Let’s Do Lunch: The Station Café

The Scene:

Formerly known as “The Filling Station,” The Station Café on South Saint Mary’s offers diners a wide array of hearty sandwiches and heavy-on-the-toppings pizzas. The restaurant opened in 2006 and expanded in August of 2011 from essentially one indoor table and an outdoor picnic bench to a much larger area which easily accommodates their regular and healthy lunchtime  crowd.

My Meal:

The Reuben… Always the Reuben. Turkey pastrami, mozzarella cheese, sauerkraut, and a secret sauce (similar to Thousand Island but with a rye bread-esque flavor) on a perfectly toasted homemade bun come together in hot, melty harmony, meeting on the metaphorical winner’s podium in the San Antonio Reuben Olympics. (A close second is the Jalapeño Roast Beef. The incredible jalapeño cilantro lime sauce on this sandwich makes my face sweat in the best way.)

One of my top two favorite Reuben sandwiches in this city is found at The Station Café.

The Price:

Most sandwiches are between $5 and $6. Pizza is between $3 and $5 a slice. If you add a salad (garden or Greek) or a soup and salad, your whole combo meal will likely run you $7 to $9.

Insider Tips:

The biggest crowds, and therefore longest wait, usually hit between 11:30am and 1p, so come a little later if you’re in a hurry.
